This class is an exploration of mixed media using non traditional methods on a range of natural and synthetic fabrics. We will draw inspiration from the natural world and build a body of work using imagery and related colour themes.

Beginners to advanced will all find something of interest in this mixed media workshop. By the end of the two days you will have experimented with some familiar and not so familiar techniques and media, and have a stash of assorted fabrics connected by imagery and colour.

We will begin on the Saturday with specimens or images that you would like to work with. The botanical theme is only a suggestion and you can bring other images. After simplifying the images the next step will be to explore the chosen specimens in every way we can manage with the mixed media methods available.

These will include a very simple but effective printing technique, monoprinting, painting, foiling, mark making with pencils, fabric crayons and pastels. We will also experiment with Transfer Dyeing which is a waterless method of dyeing on synthetic fabrics such as satins and nylons.

On Sunday there will be time to explore the techniques and media further with a discussion time about how to combine all the various elements we have made. Often we have great fun making the bits but how to design and resolve a piece can be the hardest part. So there will be hints and tips about knowing when something is finished
