In conjunction with the exhibition of the Maharajah’s Garden display at the WA Quilt Craft and Stitch Show, held on 30th July to August 1st 2010, the WA Group held a challenge, which was open to all ATASDA members. The theme was ’Natural Wonders’ and the organisers were amazed at the diverse interpretations that were received.
Textile Artist Ken Smith was a guest at the show, and he and fellow artist Jennie Abbott of WA (who was the curator the wonderful Art To Wear display) agreed to be our judges.
They found selecting a winner from the 24 entries was a very difficult task, and in the end agreed that Lichen Wonders 3 by Sandra Champion from Tasmania was outstanding.
The judges also requested to be allowed to present a Highly Commended award to Lyn Brown of WA for her postcard entitled “Kimberley Dreaming”
The WA Group would like to thank Ken Smith and Jennie Abbott for judging the competition, as well as all the ATASDA members who entered.
The postcard display at the craft show attracted as much attention as the larger Maharajah’s Garden pieces. Many viewers saw the small size, 15 x 10 cm, as an ideal way to try out designs and techniques quickly, and others were intrigued by the amount of detail that can be achieved on such a small scale.
The WA Group committee are planning another challenge for the show next year, so please watch for details to be posted on the ATASDA website and in Fibreline early in 2011.
